Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Dry Eye Treatment
Here at Richmond University Vision Care, our doctors offer Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology to treat dry eyes.
Chronic dry eye is caused by inflammation within the eyelid and meibomian glands. IPL tackles the root cause by targeting and removing abnormal blood vessels that causes inflammation. The treatment will also help to liquefy clogged oil via heat and help improve the function of the meibomian glands.
How does IPL work?
During the treatment, your doctor will provide goggles or eye shields to protect your eyes. A cooling gel is applied along the periorbital area. Subsequently, gentle pulses of visible light is used to treat the inflammation of the eyelids. Each treatment session takes 20 minutes and patients may have some temporary effects such as mild redness or discomfort, which subsides within a day. For best results, 4 sessions are recommended, every 2-4 weeks.
Am a candidate for IPL?
IPL is not for everyone, and your doctor will assess your candidacy for this treatment. IPL is best recommended for patients with fair skin, Rosacea patients, and patients with inflammation present. Patients with darker skin tones do not qualify for the treatment.
